Down from the Mountain in Rural China
All across China, the government is relocating citizens to ease growing pressures on land use—and often inciting a public outcry. In May, a man from Fujian Province suicide-bombed a government building after officials demolished his business. But in mountainous Zhejiang Province, some citizens are more than glad to be moved closer to villages with higher standards of living.
No Sheriff In This Town
Xiejiaqiao, like many rural villages in China, tends to police itself. While a pair of police officials from the county level visit the village twice a month for a report on area stability, the closest thing to local law enforcement in the village is a three-person “Violence Avoidance Committee.”
Fifth-Generation Farmer’s Son Looks Outward
Wang Zhongwei, a 49-year-old rice farmer from the Eastern Chinese village of Xiejiaqiao, can still remember when his family struggled to produce enough food for one meal a day. His 19-year-old-son Wang Yang, who grew up in the same village, never had to worry if he would have enough to eat. He can barely remember a time without the Internet.
Rural Youth Set Sights Beyond the Village
Like teens in the United States, 18-year-old Wu Jinxing relishes the idea of leaving home someday. Unlike even his peers elsewhere in China, however, Wu, who was born and raised in Xiejiaqiao, a rural village of 800 residents outside Hangzhou, might not have a choice if he wants to find a wife.
