New Mental Health Law May Signal Reform

The current draft of a new mental health bill, made available for public viewing and comment on the Legislative Affairs of the State Council website June 10, would ban compulsory mental health screenings and would allow patients diagnosed with mental disorders to be discharged from the hospital at their discretion. Patients with serious diagnoses would require the consent of their doctor or guardian.

NGOs and LBT Groups Rally Against Violence

More than 15 years have passed since the 1995 International Women’s Conference in Beijing spurred the creation of several NGOs tailored to combat domestic violence against women. Now they’re expanding the reach of their aid, partnering with lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LBT) women’s organizations in a national march toward gender equity.
